Auditions for The Dining Room

Director Stephen Haines will be holding auditions for LTC's upcoming production of A. R. Gurney'sThe Dining Room. Auditions will be Sun., Jan. 15 and Thu., Jan. 19 both at 7 p.m. at LTC's Mechanic Street Playhouse. Due to an unforeseen conflict identified after notices went out to print publications, auditions for the evening of Jan. 17th had to be changed to the 19th.

Auditions will consist of cold readings and some improvisational storytelling. Those auditioning may attend both rounds of auditions, and will be allowed full participation whenever they are in attendance. Auditions will be conducted in a group setting. There will be no auditions either individually, or by appointment. Persons auditioning must be at least 21 years of age.

The Dining Room has been critically acclaimed throughout the country. Playwright A. R. Gurney expertly and lovingly explores upper middle-class white culture as it passes through the dining room – at one time the center every home, the place where families defined themselves. In a series of scenes that take place from the 1940s to the present, characters from different families come and go, each adding a piece of the mosaic of family and social life of the vanishing upper classes. The entertaining commentary on the WASP culture is more than just a string of sketches and was generally applauded by the press as "…hilarious and touching; often rueful and, by the end, very moving … "

A total of 58 characters ranging from age 6 to 90 pass in and out of the play. Although Gurney structured the play to be performed by six actors (three males, three females), director Steven Haines will cast up to twice as many performers for the LTC production. This will allow for more participation, and will make for a less intense rehearsal schedule.

The production runs Mar. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18 at the Mechanic Street Playhouse.
